William “Melvin” Brown hails from the Hampton Park Terrace neighborhood of Charleston, South Carolina. He is the only son of deceased former CEO of the American Development Corporation, William Melvin Brown Jr and career high school sciences teacher Juanita Washington Brown. Melvin, III received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from The U.S. Naval Academy in 1991 after which he was commissioned as an Ensign in the naval service.

After completing division officer training in Newport, Rhode Island, he would go on to tours of duty involving deployments to the Mediterranean and The Black Sea. He then took an assignment as a Professor of Naval Science at The Citadel teaching future naval officers. During that time, he pursued a Master’s Degree in Biology Education in order to complete the prerequisite coursework for medical school.

On gaining acceptance to the Medical University of South Carolina, he promptly resigned his first commission and accepted a new commission and full scholarship into the U.S. Navy Medical Corps.

After medical school, Doctor Brown trained in Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine – he would go on to certify in Emergency Medicine. On active-duty naval service, he took assignments at naval hospitals located in Portsmouth, Virginia – Yokosuka, Japan, and Jacksonville, Florida. Over that time, he would deploy to West Africa and serve two combat tours in Afghanistan – one with The Marines and another with U.S./Afghan Army Joint Special Operations Task Force.

After 20 years of service, Commander Brown retired from naval service and returned to his native Charleston.

Currently Dr. Brown holds staff privileges at Trident Medical Center Charleston, SC and the VA Medical Center Charleston, SC. He holds associations with Roper/St. Francis Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina. In addition to his Board Certification in Emergency Medicine by The American Board of Emergency – Dr. Brown is a Fellow of The Academy of Academic Emergency Medicine and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

In 2022, Dr. Brown resigned his full-time position as Emergency Medicine staff physician to practice private(concierge) primary care medicine. He is the owner and sole practitioner of CharlestonMD located in downtown Charleston, SC.

In the community Dr. Brown holds elected office as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Medical University of South Carolina. He is a former trustee on the board at Porter Gaud School. He is on The Board of Directors for First Capital Bank of South Carolina.

He and his wife Deborah have two children Gabriel (29) and Lillian (18).
